About the Event
On July 3, 2020, the ABC team called a meeting with our Mayor, Tom Mrakas, to address the changes needed in our community that we love. We then created a Facebook group to provide a safe space where Black people and the entire community could build relationships through shared experiences and through the sharing of food by cooking together. Â With overwhelming support and participation, ABC quickly grew into a Registered Non-Profit Organization, serving our community on a greater level.
On September 21, 2020 we wrote a deputation requesting that Town of Aurora formally recognize and celebrate Black History Month with Flag raising and much more.Â
Black History Month has been formally celebrated in our neighbouring city, Toronto, since 1979; therefore, it was only appropriate that Aurora, the best place to live, do the same for its people. With the Town's approval, the official proclamation of Black History Month was announced on February 2, 2021. Aurora Black Community initiated, planned, collaborated and led 15 powerful programs throughout February 2021.
We live in an amazing community! We can't thank the people of Aurora enough for their support of all of our diverse residents.
"Black History is not just for Black people - Black History is Canadian [Auroran) History." ~ Jean Augustine #Blackhistory365.
Black history month is not a Black Life Protest or anti-racism function. It's a celebraton of Black excellence, accomplishments, joy, and Black Canadians' contributions to our beautiful country, Canada.
We thank the Town of Aurora for giving our association the support, resources, platform and the freedom to create, plan and lead in the work that is needed.
- Due to Covid restrictions, our 2022 Black History Celebrations will be held virtually with an opening event on February 5th and again on February 26th for our Award and Closing Ceremony. Special thanks to TD Bank for sponsoring our Live Streaming. You are in for an amazing month of celebration, education, and entertainment.
- We encourage you to purchase and consider sponsorship of this event to support our Rise-up Grant Award, and our 2022 community programs for Black and BIPOC Youths and families.
- To sponsor ABC, please make cheque payable to Aurora Black Community Inc., via our PAYPAL located on our home page, or send Email Transfer to abc@aurorablackcommunity.com.
Thank you so much for your support! Let's have a blast!

I BELIEVE GRANT Sponsorship
AURORA BLACK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION understands that the Black and other minority communities play an essential role in the economy, but in comparison to other cultures, many struggle with financial wellness. In Aurora, a traditionally economically stable community, we have many struggling to find an opportunity to come out of their circumstances and get ahead. This grant is designed to eradicate financial gaps. With your support, two candidates will be awarded $1000 February.
